Steve Hancock
a.k.a. “The Human Jukebox” Lead Vocals, Acoustic Guitars, Electric Guitar, Ukulele, Banjo, Harmonica A bio? Too much to say, and little anyone really wants to hear, but here goes… I’ve been a musician my entire life. I was singing before I could talk. My first instrument experience was trumpet. For 11 years that horn opened doors I never could have imagined. In early college I toured Europe as part of a US Honor Band. One of the best experiences of my life. Soon after starting trumpet, I discovered acoustic string instruments. First the banjo, then the mandolin, and then my life-long love – the guitar. Self taught, I never really wanted to learn scales or theory – just songs. I wanted to perform. My earliest influences were the Eagles and Cat Stevens. I remember my eldest sister handing me the “Tea for the Tillerman” album saying, “if you’re going to play guitar, this is the music you should be playing”. Easily my biggest influences are James Taylor and John Prine. Technically tough, melodically strong, and lyrically universal. Others includes CSNY, Neil Young, The Eagles, The Beatles, America, and many early country all stars. For 40+ years now the performance continues. I’ve been fortunate to have busked and played for friends across Western Europe, The Caribbean, Mexico, and at spontaneous locations around the US. When asked what type of music I play, I answer “Comfort Music”. Before I was married I said “Date Music”, but I’ve been told those days are over. I don’t feel that way when I’m playing and my wife is watching. Our time together is the best, longest date I’ve ever been on.” |
